February 6 is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.

This practice involves cutting away the external genitalia (the labia "lips" and/or clitoris) of young girls. The cut edges of skin heal leaving a small opening over the vagina. The procedure does not provide any health benefits. The long term consequences often include difficulties with childbirth, sexual and psychological problems.
