Bertina Hooks, MD

Dr. Bertina M. Hooks is a board-certified internal medicine physician, healthcare executive, entrepreneur, speaker, disability advocate, and author. In 2022, a life-threatening medical crisis resulted in a right below-the-knee amputation, transforming her perspective from physician to patient. Her experience reshaped her understanding of disability, identity, resilience, and the healthcare system itself. Today, she draws on both sides of the physician-patient relationship in her advocacy and work. Her forthcoming memoir, From Fire to Freedom: A Memoir of Transformation, Renewal, and Resilience, explores illness, disability, motherhood, medicine, loss, and the process of rebuilding a life when its expected path changes dramatically.
